Editorial Policy
How Samurai Names researches, writes, checks and corrects its samurai name guides and generator data, including our standards for kanji and history.
Samurai Names exists to give people accurate, useful information about samurai names and Japanese warrior history. This policy explains how we create and maintain our content and the data behind the generator.
Who Writes Our Content
Articles are researched and written by the Samurai Names editorial team and reviewed before publishing. Each article is credited to the team, and every page lists its publication date.
How We Research
- Kanji and meanings are checked against standard Japanese dictionaries. When a character has several meanings, we give the one most commonly associated with names.
- Historical facts such as dates, names, titles and events are taken from well established reference works on Japanese history and from museum and archive descriptions.
- Legends are labeled as legends. Famous stories about samurai often grew in later centuries, and we try to separate the story from the record.
- Romanization follows the Hepburn system. For readability we usually leave out macrons in names (Hojo rather than Hōjō) and mention long vowels where they matter.
What We Will Not Do
- Invent quotes, statistics, experts or personal experiences.
- Present made up kanji or fake meanings as real.
- Stuff articles with keywords at the expense of readers.
- Accept payment for coverage or hide sponsored content. If we ever publish sponsored content, it will be clearly labeled.
The Generator's Data
The generator draws only from curated lists of real Japanese given names, surnames, provinces, crests and vocabulary. Each entry carries its kanji and meaning. Patterns such as "no Kami" titles, the Gozen honorific, sword name endings and school names follow historical usage, and our guides explain where each pattern comes from.
Corrections
If you find an error, email samurainames@gmail.com with the page and the problem. We review every report. Confirmed errors are fixed promptly, and significant corrections are noted on the page.
Updates
We review our guides periodically to keep links, examples and information current. When an article changes in a meaningful way, we update its date.

Samurai Names is independent and not affiliated with any game studio, publisher or institution. Our recommendations are our own.
