A character name belongs to one person: Takeda Shingen. A clan name belongs to a whole house: the Takeda. In Japanese the clan name is also the first part of each member's name, so the two work together. If you are building a world, name the houses first, then use their family names for the people inside them.
Historical-inspired names follow how real people were named: modest surnames from the landscape, two-character formal names, everyday common names, honorifics that match rank. Fantasy names push the drama with words like black iron, crescent moon or nine-headed dragon. Both are useful. Our tools label which is which, so you never mistake an invented combination for a real person or family.
Every generator shows the kanji behind each name and the standard meaning of each part. A name such as Tsukioka is written 月岡, "moon" and "hill." Family names usually describe a place, so their meanings are literal descriptions of land rather than statements about character. Our guide to reading the kanji in samurai names goes further.
Japanese names put the family before the person, and our tools follow that order. Oda Nobunaga is Nobunaga of the Oda. Ancient lineage names insert no, as in Minamoto no Yoritomo, and titles such as Gozen, hime or "no Kami" follow the name.
Samurai history belongs to Japan. We use real Japanese names and words with correct kanji, we avoid inventing fake Japanese, and we keep history conservative. A generated combination may match a real person by chance, and invented epithets, aliases and sword stories are fiction. If you want a name for a real Japanese context, such as a business in Japan, ask a native speaker to check how it reads. Read our editorial policy to see how we research names.

FAQs
Start with the Samurai Name Generator if you are not sure. It covers twelve styles in one tool. Move to a dedicated generator when you need more control over one kind of name, such as clan names, ronin, women warriors, swords or shinobi.
Yes. All of them are free, with no signup and no limits. They run entirely in your browser, and favorites are stored only on your own device.
Each generator keeps its own favorites list on your device, so a shortlist of sword names does not get mixed up with a shortlist of clan names. Favorites stay until you clear them or clear your browser data.
The words, names and kanji are real Japanese, and the naming patterns follow documented habits. The combinations themselves are fictional unless a result is clearly labelled as historical, as with the real clans in the Samurai Clan Name Generator.
You can use generated names in books, games, streams and other creative projects. Names are not owned by anyone, but if you plan to register a name as a trademark, check the relevant registries first. Our disclaimer explains more.
